The University Lands: Resources & Higher Education in Texas

The 2.1 million-acre land reserve of the University of Texas and Texas A&M University, called “university lands,” played a significant role in the financial history of both institutions. The university lands are also an important part of the history of Texas, and in particular, West Texas. Revenue from minerals and surface usage has made the Permanent University Fund, or PUF, the largest endowment of a public institution in the United States.
